Jen,

Thank you for your response.

I was having problem with it and ended up wipping everything off the hard drive. And I accidentally deleted the recovery partition thinking I doidn't need it.

I actually would like to upgrade to Windows 10, if possible.

Emerald Dragon

- No recovery drive on Vaio Care because I deleted it and created only one drive.

- Tried install Vaio Control Center 6.1.XXXX , 6.2.XXXX , 6.3.XXXX , 6.4.XXXX it still does not show.

- Tried another model driver ex. SVP13XXXXXX it still does not show.

- Tried driver for windows 7,8,8.1 it still does not show.

- Tried driver Hotkey(win8) it still does not show.

- Tried changing the driver installation sequence it still does not show.

- Tried re-install windows because I think that the installation before and after are related (9-10 times).

VAIO Power Management is the key for Battery care and fan speed function ?

Ah, I love it when these wonderful time saving devices stop saving time, don't you?

Alright, I install my own operating systems, and different type and sometimes the start up (like in Win XP was Autoexec.bat) get either erased or replaced.

The problem you are facing is the BIOS cannot find your operating system because the start up is gone.

I am pretty sure it is unrealistic to think this early into your install, that you had made any kind of back up, right????

There is no way to undo what has happened, but as this is a new install, I would suggest reinstalling your op system again.

I don't know how long you  have been using the Vaio since install and how much data you may have saved on the hard drive.

When I install a new system, I don't save anything (data) to the hard drive, I use a usb drive or a usb hdd.  That way if this happens while installing programs or drivers ( it happens more often than not ), you won't lose anything important.

Others may have a different fix but you can always go back to a new install.

Get used to making back ups both on the windows system and outside on another hard drive.  I think windows has a program to let you do that or look on the web.  If you have no data on the Vaio, then you have lost nothing but time.  Reinstall and start over.

GOOD LUCK

EDIT:

I just had an after thought....

You need to make a disk to be able to run your computer from the DVD.  With this, if you do have data on the hard drive, you can retrieve it.

I suggest downloading a Linux Program.  I use Voyager X2, but there are many, MANY out there to choose from.

It will download as an ISO file.

Assuming you are running a windows program, use a free program called FREEISOBURNER.exe to burn the ISO file to a DVD.

To run the DVD, you will put the DVD in the drive and start the computer.

On a Lenovo, you will hit enter when it comes up on screen then follow the windows to start the DVD drive

On the last Vaio I used, I had to hit F8 to get those windows to come up.

Once the DVD starts being read, you will be asked to run from the DVD or to install and of course you want to run LIVE from the DVD.  The program will start and run from the DVD drive, not the hard drive and you can access the HDD UNLESS the dvd has crashed its zero cylinder which means a lot of time and work to get your data back.  I do not believe this is the case for you, you just lost the start up instructions.

The zero cyclinder (the first space on the Disc that is read ((the disk is read from the inside out))) has the information the computer needs to find your files.  Once that is gone, the disc cannot be read normally and you have to get a program that will let you read the disk, and it wont' be easy as the names get erased and you have to seach through everything to find your data.  Not that it happens a lot but, make the backups to prevent this.

Hi, Emerald_Dragon

We are sorry for what happened to your computer. If there is no available recovery disc for your unit, you may try using a retail version instead. I'm not quite sure if there are still available Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium operating systems right now but this is the option that you may try. Download the drivers and software here once you get the right operating system: https://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-home.pl?mdl=VGNNR160E&template_id=1&region_id=1&tab=download#/downloadTab

Hi, Akoneko47

Thank you for considering Sony Community!

This is one of the reasons why we do not recommend performing a clean install of Windows operating system (O.S.). Aside from that, SVP1321BPXB is not compatible with Windows 10 O.S. There are no compatible drivers and software that will support the latest Windows O.S.: https://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-home.pl?mdl=SVP1321BPXB&template_id=1&region_id=1&tab=download#/downloadTab

Hello Vincent,

Thanks for the reply, and Happy ThanksGiving to you.

Ok, let me be a little straight-forward and no BS as possible.....I understand you guys need to be as "official" as possible. But look, my vgn-ar770 costed me more than $3000 back then, and even the spec info indicates it is 64 bits capable. Vista was OS but many people already moved on, earlier, i tried to move to windows 10 but drivers issue(s) made me to go back.

Look, I went to Nvidia and was able to find the driver for the GeForce 8600M GT graphics video card, but installation is a problem, the microsoft genetic driver now is running the show, and that's why i need to unsit and put the Nvidia driver, ...

Yes, you are correct, the support page for my AR770-Vista-Ultimate only offers drivers based on Vista, but I already got the driver from Nvidia, just need to go to BIOS to select "switchable" from Intergrated" so that Nvidia can runs the show, that's all. Besides, I am NOT asking you guys to give me any drivers nor trying to get anything I am NOT entitled to,....

How can we be a loyal customer moving forward if something like this,...you guys refuse to help?? It is tough to be a Sony customer, it was a glory thing ...

Instruction please,...

Bought a new SSD drive and was hoping that I could use recovery disk and a system image to get the PC up and running. Microsoft tell me that images are stored as SATA images and won't work on SSD drives. Is there any software I can use to convert a system image on a storage drive so I can load the system image?

To be honest, if you are tiring about typing Windows 7 admin password before loging the system and knowing the password, you can remove the password after succeed in loging the system and then go to the Control Panel >> User Accounts to remove the admin password if you like. And Once you forget the password, and you still want to bypass the Windows 7 Login Screen, you can follow my words. I used to be locked out of Windows 7 system for forgetting the password many times, and some of my friends just felt annoying for i constantly asking for help and they recommended a third party recovery tool to me: iSunshare Windows 7 Password Genius. And i did reset my Windows 7 password myself by following its instructions. Now i would share it with your guys.Refer to Reset Admin Account Password in Windows 7.

They also offer some detailed steps to teach you how to use their product. Hope you like it.

Sony Vaio PCG-961C, Windows XP install

Hi all,

I bought an very old Sony Vaio PCG-961C, with an installed Windows XP Prof 32bit.

I bought it at first for the internal harddrive to use it for another laptop.

But someone is interested so I thought I will check the system etc.

I found out that there were 3 windows installations in the Windows Explorer. 2 of them were to see before starting up.

I installed a very old version of Firefox because Internet Explorer gave issues during the browsing.

When I started the next day the laptop and clicked on firefox it gave an error message and I had to do a SFC/ Scannow.

During that scan it asked for a windows cd. I did not get a windows xp or recovery cd`s.

The CD drive does not read my own Windows XP CD and I have also tried to install Windows by an USB sticks. I have tried it will all programs that are available. I have also tried to install it by an external CD/DVD drive.

Today I have read that it is impossible to install Windows by USB because that is blocked by Sony.

What can I do without making to many costs for such an old laptop?

I thank you in advance for your advise.

Re: Linux

I am new to the LINUX family of OpSystems.

The simple answer is NO.  You can load a Linux / ubuntu system to DUAL BOOT at start up.  That is, you can select a Windows op system or a Linux / ubuntu op system.

( do note that for some reason, I have read that SONY may not allow dual boot on their machines -- crazy )

Linux MINT is very popular right now.  I like VOYAGER X2 because of some if its desktop features.

Linux / ubuntu also offers multiple work screens.  It all runs similar to Windows.  Linux / ubuntu offer hundreds of desktops so if you don't like one, pick another.

and the LIVE versions of the Linux / ubuntu operating systems allow you to run from the DVD without installation to do a "TEST RUN" of the opsystem.

It's easy to give it a try and no changes to the hard drive unless you want to install it.

Re: Proper way to install Linux?

Linux / ubuntu installs rather easily on a hard drive that only has one partion.  You would select "install next to your operating system" and the Linux / ubuntu install will make its own partition.

If you have multiple partitions, it becomes a bit more complicated for the beginner.

ABSOLUTELY first thing, make a mirror image of your hard drive so you can return to the present hdd configuration.  I would make two and store on different drives.

In the case of a DESKTOP, the easiest way to install and not lose anything is just put in a different hard drive.  This is not as easily done, if it can be done at all, with a lap top.

ALSO, it is possbile to run from the DVD or from a live USB but you need to do your home work to get to boot from a USB.  CHECK the Linux / ubuntu FORUMS for lots of good information.

If you are just installing a Linux / ubuntu system, you can select install and Format the entire drive and it will install easily.

If you want to run DUAL BOOT and have mulitple partitions, get your pencil and paper out.

( do note that SONY may not allow dual boot on their machines... do your research )

Note the size of each partition, then label what is in those partitions... IE:  windows, data, pics, etc.

When the install selection windows comes up, you have choices for install.  if you do not understand them, STOP.

In some cases you would select....   Do Something Different.

On the next screen you are shown the different partitions, including sizes.  You need to compare the sizes to understand what is in those partitions.

You need to have pre-decided what partition you want Linux / ubuntu installed in.   Select that partition (by size).  Dbl click that partition and you get the setup screen.  you will also set it to root.  It may ask for a swap partion, about 5 g is needed.  If you can't select the swap partition, you can force through it to install.

The partition will be formatted in ext4 normally.  you may have to select this also.

OF COURSE you made a mirror image of the hard drive BEFORE you started the install.  IF yoU mess up, you can restore back to the original configuration.  It is easy to do when you are unfamiliar with this system.

Installs really easily, runs a lot like windows with some differences that are easily adapted to.

One caution, the Linux / ubuntu desktops come with many different options.  Some are unique.  During the install or upgrade, you maybe asked if you want the configuration changed.  If you say yes, you may lose some of these unique options.  If the OpSYS is pretty normal, it won't matter, if you don't know, say NO.
